I went to see the new cafe that opened in Kanazawa’s Higashi Chaya District. It’s called “Higashiyama Yanonegawa.”

The Higashi Chaya District is a major sightseeing spot in Kanazawa, but when you go a little beyond the main area, the traffic thins out. Yanonegawa (Yanone River) is in a quiet neighborhood. The cafe boasts coffee made from well water drawn from the underground water supply below the premises. And the coffee does have a particularly good taste. It would be interesting to taste the well water before and after drinking the coffee.

There’s a Shishi lion statue from over 500 years ago right next to the well, and under that is a fortune-teller vending machine. Your 300 yen fortune comes out in a capsule, but the writing doesn’t show up until it’s immersed in water. The idea is to dip it in the well water or the Yanone River.

In the cafe souvenir shop. you can buy Shishi Lion chopstick rests and keyholders made by the Kutaniyaki pottery artist, Ametsuchi. Those and other Kutaniyaki pieces are available at reasonable prices.
