Sofuan, a new Japanese-style boutique hotel with its own tea ceremony room has opened near the Omi-cho Market. It’s located in a beautiful old merchant house located in the Nishi-cho area, and it’s available only to one small group at a time. The proprietress, Kazuyo Fujita, who grew up in Kanazawa, is a long-time elementary school teacher who took early retirement to start this new phase of her life. She’s a master calligrapher with years of teaching experience. She learned flower arrangement and the “urasenke” method of tea ceremony from her mother at home while growing up.
In response to the dramatic development of Kanazawa since the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen, she has opened Sofuan out of a desire to pass on Japan’s traditional culture to the next generation here in her hometown of Kanazawa.
